T is for Trauma

Through years of scientific study on behavioral and developmental aspects of adopted children, the impacts of trauma have become evident in nearly every case. Even children who are adopted at birth - born with their adopted parents in the delivery room - experience the trauma of removal from their birth mother.

It’s easy to associate trauma with children from hard places. Abuse, neglect, and poverty make a more obvious impact on development and behaviors.

But trauma and chaos in utero and the separation from biology can be as impactful and damaging as their more-recognizable effectors.

At Dwell, we’re committed to helping parents build attachment by practicing the principles of Trust Based Relational Intervention, focusing on empowerment, connection, and correction as they help their children overcome and cope with trauma.

“Children who have experienced early adversities are at risk for behavioral problems and trauma symptoms. Trust-Based Relational Intervention is a trauma-informed, attachment-based intervention, which is proven to reduce behavioral problems and trauma symptoms in at-risk adopted children.”
