National Adoption Awareness Month
Today kicks off our series for National Adoption Awareness Month, and we're excited to share a little bit of insight and perspective with you as we tackle the big, messy, hard, beautiful world of adoption. We're going to take you through our adoption alphabet, and hope to spark questions, conversation, and curiosity to learn more with our posts.
First introduced by the Governor of Massachusetts in 1976 as one day to help bring awareness to the state that there were children in the foster care system who needed permanency and families, National Adoption Awareness Month has become a huge movement for all sides of the triad, allowing for open conversation, learning, and the sharing of our vastly different perspectives.
Before we get too far, we want to define a keyword that you will see pop up throughout this month - TRIAD. Triad is the word we use to speak about the collective adoption world, encompassing the perspectives of Adoptees, Birth Families, and Adoptive Parents. Each representing one leg of the triangle, they bring their own unique set of desires, hopes, and heartbreak to the conversation.
We acknowledge the importance of the voices from all three sides.
Most of our posts have been written by our assistant, Katie. Her experience as an adoptive mother in an open relationship with her child's first family is only one of the thousands of perspectives you can have on adoption. We are also excited to feature a few guest writers, each bringing with them their own unique and nuanced view of adoption.
We look forward to learning alongside you and encourage you to join us in our reflections by sharing how each word and topic resonates with you.
